A word about resolutions

“For last year's words belong to last year's language

And next year's words await another voice.”

T.S. Eliot

A new year is almost here. With it comes new possibilities, a fresh start and just maybe an opportunity to leave those bad habits behind.

Resolutions used to be a popular way to greet the new year. But those came with a lot of stress and disappointment since resolutions offer a 15% success rate. You rarely hear about them anymore, for good reason.

Today, the popular thing to do is pick a word of the year. Picking a word of the year can bring clarity and focus to who we want to become and what we want to accomplish in life. A carefully chosen word can help us stay motivated as we push toward our goals in 2022.

When we choose a word that gently guides us through our year, we have the flexibility to meet goals or change them as our life needs vary.

Choosing the word is the hard part. Here are some steps you can take as you ponder the word you want to motivate you in 2022.

  • During your quiet time, ask God to lead you through prayer and scripture.

  • Look over your accomplishments for 2021 and your dreams for 2022. Jot down some words that describe who you want to be at the close of 2022.

  • Only you can pick your word. Don't run it by your family and friends. Once you pick it, tell them your word with confidence.

  • Don't hurry. Take your time to make sure you get the word that will suit you best.

  • There are quizzes that can help. My writer friend Rachael Adams has one that you might want to try.

  • Pray and listen to God as you choose your word. (I know I said this twice, but it's the most important step!)

I would love to hear your word if you have one. It would be my privilege to pray over your word and year with you. Send it to me at nitawilkinson1@gmail.com.
